Unbalanced loads are common in many industries, causing poor power factor correction when using traditional APFC systems with only one CT.
In unbalanced conditions (example: R=800A, Y=1000A, B=1200A), a 1 CT APFC relay measures current from just one phase. This leads to inaccurate compensation and a lower average power factor.
Result with 1 CT: Average PF achieved = 0.902 Lag
Use a 3 CT APFC Controller that takes current inputs from all three phases (R, Y, B) and calculates the average current.
This gives a more accurate picture of the actual load, resulting in better power factor correction.
Result with 3 CT: Average PF achieved = 0.985 Lag
In unbalanced load conditions, a 3 CT APFC controller delivers significantly better power factor than a 1 CT controller.
etaULTRA 3 CT APFC Controller from Lauritz Knudsen is specially designed for this purpose. It works with both contactor and thyristor-based APFC panels and helps achieve near-unity power factor even in challenging unbalanced loads.
If your plant has unbalanced loads, upgrading to a 3 CT APFC relay is a smart move. It improves power factor, reduces penalties, and optimizes your capacitor bank performance.
Takeaway: For unbalanced loads, 3 CT is clearly better than 1 CT.
