A major component of the utility bill apart from energy consumption is MD. Rather than relying on getting to know this information at the end of the month, it is prudent to keep the present demand level info at fingertips. Analysis of utility bill data and monitoring its trends helps energy manager to identify ways for electricity bill reduction through available provisions in tariff framework, apart from energy budgeting.

What is MD?

Demand is the measure of average power consumption over a fixed time interval. For example, in India, 15 min or 30 mins is followed as per state regulations. In Middle East and South East Asian countries 30 min demand interval is followed. It is important to note that while maximum demand is recorded, it is not the instantaneous demand drawn, as is often misunderstood, but the time integrated demand over the predefined recording cycle.

To understand this further let us take the example of a 30 min demand interval period used by utilities:

3000 KVA for 10 mins

1500 KVA for 15 mins

3000 KVA for 5 mins

MD will be computed as:

MD Equation

E&A’s 6000 series Max Demand Controller offers max demand monitoring with controlling using 4 relay outputs. The MD value in the meter can be reset either manually or automatically when integrated with E&A’s SmartComm EMS. It has a special feature to reset the MD value automatically either on a daily or monthly basis from the software to the device thus empowering the user with full control on MD.

E&A’s SmartComm EMS

With SmartComm EMS, the monthly max demand wrt running demand can be quickly plotted to understand the daily / monthly MD patterns.

SmartComm EMS

These load curves can help the user to plan the contract demand with Utility in an effective manner if required.

Along with MD, Time of the day wise energy consumption is available for the users to monitor their energy consumption based on tariff slots. The meter also has PQ Monitoring features of THD% for Voltage and Current, Individual harmonics upto 31st . Integration of MD Controller 6000 series with E&A SmartComm EMS helps in getting insights and take actions to reduce energy bills.

Relay outputs for control

MD Controller 6000 series has 4 relay outputs for effective load management. The 4 relays can be used for pre-alarm purposes or load shedding. The relays can be programmed in a manner that if the load crosses a threshold i.e pre-set demand, some of non-essential loads can be switched off. Using SmartComm EMS, live trend of running demand and max demand can also help the user to visualise the load curves and understand it clearly when relay gives tripping command.

Recommended Actionable

  1. At the incomer level the maximum demand can be reduced by using capacitor banks with APFC’s that switch ON and OFF the capacitor banks to maintain the desired power factor of system and optimize maximum demand thereby. This will lead to reduced kVA demand charges in EB bills.
  2. The operation of Diesel Generation sets are used to supplement the power supplied by the electric utilities, it is advisable to connect the D.G. sets for durations when demand reaches the peak value. This would reduce the load demand to a considerable extent and minimize the demand charges.
  3. Process change management: Using the load curve information large electric loads and equipment operations can be rescheduled for different shifts. This planning will help to minimize the effect of simultaneous maximum demand. To achieve this, it is recommended to prepare the process operation flow chart, analyse these and plan to reschedule the operations and running equipment in such a way to improve the load factor which in turn reduces the maximum demand.

Demand information on fingertips with SMS

The SMS module of SmartComm EMS can be used to get the demand related information immediately as SMS on cell phone so that even if the user is not available in front of EMS workstation, he/she can be immediately notified for suitable corrective /preventive actions if required.

Conclusion

The user can maximise profitability of their facility with usage of E&A 6000 series MD Controller and SmartComm EMS for effective demand management.
